I'll go through a vanilla WoTC then wait for long war and other mods to catch up. I had my fun beta testing Xcom 2 and dlc. You can argue they wanted all resources focused on making the expansion as polished as possible but when you follow the money it paints a ugly picture. Almost suggesting my original purchase didn't make them enough money to warrant continued support.

It stings that all that hope I had for a performance patch was only done for the expansion. In essence making my 2 year old computer run like your 9 year old computer Instead I fell into the realm of some mix of hardware and OS the game just didn't like. With a newer high end computer I expected above average performance even on a badly optimized game. I guess it's just a matter of perspective. There is a middle ground to be found somewhere in there. The game ran on my nine year old rig just fine, even if not ideally. I think I can agree that to a degree the original release wasn't the success it should've been because of these technical issues, but it wasn't a failure on my end at least. The day Firaxis embraces loot crates is the day I'll truly go on the offensive. While I appreciate the view that this could set a bad precedent, this isn't enough to rile my bood. Similar to how Enemy Within is kinda just part of the EU package nowadays. War of the Chosen is kind of a big investment to ask of people right now but eventually it'll just be something you get with XCOM 2 almost by default. So I do understand/respect where you're coming from.ДЄs I said though, I do think this problem will sort itself out in the longrun. I myself am of the opinion framerate and load times should be prioritized in general more than they are in the industry.

But I think a strong case can be made that developers in general don't nearly do enough to optimize, suggesting that super-optimized games like Doom 2016 should be the standard rather than the exception. I don't agree that the original game was a failure in its optimization, at worst it's just mediocre if you're to grade it on some kind of curve. Don't believe me? Look at how they pretty much sell Enemy Within these days for the price of a handshake and a breath mint. It's a moot point anyway: even if you don't have War of the Chosen right now, it's only a matter of time before you will. For me WoTC's loading improvements are more or less just a wonderful bonus. If you feel the game that existed before was too broken to be worth playing and that Firaxis abandoned a duty of care to their customer, I can sort of understand that angle, but I personally didn't mind vanilla's load times all that much. Call War of the Chosen an 'expansion' is almost misleading because they didn't build upon old code, they put time and resources into making it a new game entirely. They even considered making it XCOM 3 at first.

I mean it does kinda suck that these improvements aren't retroactive? But as others have pointed out, they practically took the old code and made an XCOM 2.5 with this one. I absolutely understand and am enthusiastic to see consumer advocacy, I'm a big fan of the Jimquisition. I find to be a bit regressive in thinking, or at the very least punishing of progress. They're essentially saying they've have preferred both versions to have really long loading times than for either one to run better. I think people who are upset that the game runs better w/ the expansion are. If Firaxis had all the time and money in the world, I'm sure vanilla X2 would be updated. If it pisses you off enough, vote with your wallet or at the very least put your anger where it's deserved - the game industry as a whole and the nature of publisher/developer relationships. I've worked at an independent developer before who ended up being forced to release a shitty game before it was truly ready, and let me tell you, time and money are not exactly things that are in abundance on the developer's side of things when there's a hard deadline looming. Firaxis had a deadline to meet and they met it.

If you're going to rant about 'THE DEVS' then at least be proper and rant about 'THE PUBLISHER' because they are the ones bankrolling it. They are getting funded to complete Project A, not to revamp Project B. The reality is that they are an independent game developer working under time and budgetary constraints imposed by a publisher that they can't do much about. The thing that pisses me off about everyone up in arms about this is that there's this implication that 'THE DEVS' - whatever that means - are cackling gleefully while lighting cigars with $1,000 bills they earned from DLC profits, laughing at all the suckers who paid for performance improvements after a long period of twiddling their thumbs, doing nothing before the game was released.
